CMG Swatchbook – Color Directions

The 1970’s:

1970: By the late 1960s, studying current colors was not enough, and participation in CMG’s COLORFAIR was waning. Color decision makers needed more forward direction; thus, a new program that focused on future rather than current colors emerged. Initially titled CMG’s Colorcard, it asked members to submit their three best selling colors, and then what they believed the next wave would be. The information was compiled by the Committee and shared as a tool with participating members. Fully formalized in 1972, this became CMG’s Color Directions®, and was the result of workshops that would forecast one and two years out.

Today, we continue CMG’s Color Directions program through the collaborative development and annual release of our World Color Forecast™, which provides directional color forecasts two years from market, across four international regions.

CMG Swatchbook is a bi-monthly feature focused on key moments in CMG’s history. We look forward to sharing these events across 2022. Our anniversary celebration will culminate at our annual International Summit held this coming November. There will be more details to come, and we look forward to seeing you there!
