A Designer in the Making

Emily Intrain, Bissell

When I was a child, I would play outside in our yard making “leaf” houses. I would rake leaves and layout a floorplan to my “house” in the front yard. I would then bring all my stuffed animals out and furnish the “house” with lawn furniture, etc. I look back and now know I was destined to be a designer of some sort.

I am a “Summer”. By that I mean a beach person. “Summers” need to create and express themselves. These attributes led me to the design profession. I have worked across a broad spectrum of industries including architecture, automotive, & consumer products. I have degrees in both Interior Design and Industrial Design from accredited universities in Michigan. These complement each other and allow me to follow my passion of making life easier and more enjoyable through design. I try to do this every day by using colors, materials, and finishes. These are tools of my creativity.

The Power of a Color Palette

Virtually every project I work on is affected by color. Our products are sold in store & online all over the world. The first thing people notice is the color. Typically, we have 3-5 seconds to get someone’s attention. Color is the best way to do that. Having the most up to date and trendy colors is what helps sell our products.

Where We Need to be Going

At Bissell I lead the Aesthetic Attribute team that executes color, material, finishes selection and graphics for all of BISSELL’S consumer product portfolios. Being a part of CMG has given me access to resources that have transformed our color palette. By having the most up to date information on international trends, I am able to educate our senior management team on where we need to be going, from a design standpoint, as a company. This allows us to separate our brand from our competitors.

“As a designer I have found my experience with CMG to be an invaluable resource. The ability to meet with such a diverse group of talented industry leaders has given me an edge over designers who are not a part of CMG.”
